SEASON 2022 - Reports
A light breeze was blowing and all apart from Kindling fitted their largest sails. Kindling managed to avoid the weed that has grown at the startline by tacking towards the long side before tacking back towards the short shore. Pioneer tried the same tactic but it wasn't sailing as high so when it tacked it ploughed into the weed as did the others. They all struggled to get beyond the weed the impact was compounded with a drop in wind speed. Kindling with a good lead continued to the returning goal. With its spinnaker removed it maintained its lead but Skua was closing. At the Coronation pier Kindling was tightened to avoid the Point but it entered the weed where it spun whilst and slowly pushed through. Skua seeing the cause of Kindlings spin removed its spinnaker to gain the lead crossing the finish line moments before Kindling was freed. Barracuda also sailing well on its spinnaker collided with the Restlesswave as it was tacking, having greater sail power it dragged both to the Hole.
1. Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 44:58, 2. Kindling Kevin & Lewis Paterson 45:52, 3. Barracuda Shirley & Cory Macleod 53:22
During the interval the wind dropped and turned more of a beam direction across the loch. This time spinnakers were fitted at the startline and it was possible for a single tack on the return. Skua took an early lead followed by Restlesswave and Bluehaze. Kindling and Barracuda collided at the start spinning them round as they got freed Kindling was now oversailed, heading towards the long side. Restlesswave and Barracuda adopted flat spinnakers, Bluehaze fitted with a balloon spinnaker was tightened on the short shore picking up pace and direction passing Restlesswave then passing Skua taking the lead into the returning goal. With its spinnaker removed the sails were tightened and set to return. It managed to sail from goal to goal extending its lead from the following fleet.
1. Bluehaze Michael Paterson & Rory Sinclair 25:37, 2. Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 31:37, 3. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 32:32, 4. Barracuda Shirley & Cory Macleod 32:50, 5. Kindling Kevin & Lewis Paterson 37:15
A strong wind was blowing on our backs as we stood at the start line with midsails and spinnakers fitted to the starboard side we set off at pace following the short shore. Kindling ahead just parallel at the point it picked up weed at the shore where it was cleared and continued ahead followed closely by Restlesswave and Skua. As we progressed Kindling backfilled at the burn then headed towards the long side allowing Restlesswave and Skua to catchup. After a few minutes it righted itself to then proceed to the returning goal. Spinnaker removed and sails tightened it appeared as though the potential was there to make a single tack to the finish. With Kindling overtightened, Restlesswave in the middle and Skua not sailing as high we were all level but spread across the width of the loch. Just passed the Chicken rock the wind shifted and we all headed towards the Hole. Skua first to hit shore had a long tack to the shed. Next Restlesswave was tightened and managed to sail to the Point on the short side and finally Kindling now level with Restlesswave they were side by side as they crossed the finish line with only two seconds separating them. Restlesswave got the win.
1. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 28:31, 2. Kindling Kevin & Michael Paterson 28:33, 3. Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 33:29
During the interval Restlesswave reduced sail size as the wind picked up slightly. From the whistle Restlesswave was off to a fast start, Kindling sailing erractically with an overly tight mainsail occassionally showed signs of speed but backfilling twice put paid to any benefit, Skua was sailing steady following the short shore. On the return Restlesswave was ahead in the distance as Kindling and Skua removed spinnakers. Skua sailing quickly into the wind left Kindling behind with a tack they made their way to the finish line.
1. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 29:37, 2. Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 34:03, 3. Kindling Kevin & Michael Paterson 35:56
Medium suits and a resoanable breeze, each vessel sailing high, tacking was required to progress down the loch. Restlesswave was the quickest moving and took the lead but as we progressed the Pioneer on an opposing tack overtook prior to entering the returning goal, Skua not sailing as high took several more tacks to reach the goal. With spinnakers fitted to the port side Restlesswave regained the lead and followed the short shore, Kindling slacker headed toward the longside and landed in the Hole, Pioneer and Skua not far behind. Restlesswave rounded the Point to take the win, Kindling picked up weed as it was released and as it dawdled across the loch Pioneer took advantage to gain a position. Skua also landed in the Hole being of shallow draft it was easier to recover to take fourth place.
1. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 30:36, 2. Pioneer Peter Sinclair & Bruce Marshall 32:37, 3. Kindling Kevin & Katie Paterson 33:28, 4. Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 38:53
Restlesswave again off to a strong start with Pioneer just behind, Kindling pointing high was slower. Tacking a couple of times Restlesswave, Pioneer and Kindling entered the returning goal and with spinnakers fitted they exited in that order. Kindling moving quickly passed Pioneer at the burn and was slowly gaining on Restlesswave. It caught it at the Point just outside the finish line, both neck and neck heading towards the finish line Kindling somehow backfilled just a few boat lengths from crossing the line and the win went to Restlesswave.
1. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 30:16, 2. Kindling Kevin & Katie Paterson 30:29, 3. Pioneer Peter Sinclair & Bruce Marshall 33:05
First race, light winds and top suits, Aurora was off to a good start with its sails slack. It was an off beam wind which potentially is a straight run from end to end, but as we all passed the half way point a wind shift occurred and all boats sailed towards the long side. We all required tacks to the returning goal. Aurora led ahead of Restlesswave with Kindling and Skua behind. On the return with balloon spinnakers fitted, Aurora, Restlesswave, Kindling all equally spaced. Kindling gained on the Restlesswave which in turn gained on Aurora. All three were side by side at shed with another wind shift Aurora and Restlesswave sailed deep in the Hole, Kindling was on the edge. With spinnakers now removed, accidentally Kindlings jib was slack so it floundered changing tack to fallback into last place. Restlesswave and Aurora tightened their sails to cross the finish line followed by Skua.
1. RestlessWave Graham & Adam Robertson 35:58, 2. Aurora Archie & Fiona Miller 36:38, 3. Skua Innes Scollay 41:25, 4. Kindling Kevin & Katie Paterson 42:18
2nd race, beam wind, all apart from Kindling used flat spinnakers. Aurora was well placed sailing in the middle of the loch with Restlesswave closeby. A wind change occurred at the burn where all vessels fell off to the long side. Flat spinnakers were removed so they could continue to the returning goal. Restlesswave was quick to turnaround with a spinnaker refitted, Aurora was next but Kindling managed to turn quicker as no spinnaker was attached and it passed Aurora. Skua removed its flat spinnaker at the Chicken rock with a wind shift it sailed to the burn on the Short shore. On the return, the wind now blowing from the south. Aurora and Skua both fitted flat spinnakers outstretched to mimmick a balloon spinnaker on the port side, it was slow going. Kindling at the burn backfilled sailing towards the long side where it turned, at the same time the wind shifted and it sailed back across the loch. On the short shore a balloon spinnaker was fitted to the starbord side and with a gust it drove it again to the long side but this time it aimed for the Hole. On the long shore the spinnaker was flipped onto the port side everything was OK until it hit a stone and again it sailed to the short shore just beyond the shed. Care was taken to get it across the finish line some way behind everyone else. Skua was struggling behind and as it passed the shed it was removed from the race.

The Wick Model Yacht Club held its annual MayDay event with eight races held over two days. Usually a competition against a group of sailors from the Kirkwall Model Yacht Club but unfortunately this year the Orcadians could not attend. Each days racing began at 11am going through to 4pm. A quick summary of the weather, both days were overcast with very light winds giving a frustrating weekends worth of sailing.
Contenders:
- Aurora sailed by Archie & Fiona Miller
- Kindling sailed by Kevin & Lewis Paterson
- Pioneer sailed by Peter & Rory Sinclair
- RestlessWave sailed by Graham & Adam Robertson
- Barracuda sailed by Shirley & Cory Macleod
- Skua sailed by Innes Scollay & David Sutherland
- BlueHaze sailed by Michael & Alexa Paterson
First race - 1st Leg of Thrumster Estate Cup
With a whistle blow we embarked from the startline sailing began with a long tack into the wind towards the short side. It quickly became apparent the wind had eased causing all the vessels apart from the Kindling to drift towards the shed. As each boat tried in vain to continue by tacking back and forth progress was not made resulting in removal from the race. Kindling however managed to sail towards the Chicken rock where it continued to sail along the long side eventually arriving at the returning goal. With a spinnaker fitted to its starboard side it continued its solo return along the short shore to the finish.
Result: 1. Kindling.
Second race - 1st leg of Quatercentenary Cup
Aurora, RestlessWave upsized to fit their largest sails as the wind strength had shown no improvement. Aurora began with a good line combined with pace. Kindling sailing high reached the long side whilst the Restlesswave was tight and moving slowly. Pioneer and BlueHaze were unfortunate again making only partial progress resulting in removal. Aurora first to the returning goal with a good lead followed by Kindling and Restlesswave with Barracuda behind. Aurora with a spinnaker fitted to its starboard side was sailing well straight down the centre of the loch, Kindling was gaining. As both vessels passed the shed Kindling overtook Aurora to take the win, on inspection Aurora picked up weed causing its slow pace. Restlesswave and Barracuda some way behind continued to happily complete a run.
Result: 1. Kindling, 2. Aurora, 3. Restlesswave, 4. Barracuda
Third race - 2nd Leg of Thrumster Estate Cup
As we prepped for race start the wind dropped and turned slightly so from the startline the sails were slackened to compensate. Again the light winds caused issues this time Aurora, Pioneer, Barracuda & BlueHaze all pulled out. Restlesswave managed to catch a little wind hugging the long side. Kindling turned returning to the startline where it restarted its run almost half a lochs length behind Restlesswave. As Kindling approached the Chicken rock a spinnaker was added due to another wind shift. At this point Restlesswave was entering the returning goal with a quick turnaround and no spinnaker fitted it set off with a couple of minor adjustments on the short shore. Kindling at the returning goal removed its spinnaker sailed down the middle of the loch not gaining, but as Restlesswave was parallel with the shed it fell off, with lack of wind. Kindling continuing passed Restlesswave to complete the race but unfortunately both vessels were unsuccesful as the one hour time limit was called, so this race had no finishers.
Result: no finishers.
Fourth race - 2nd Leg of Quatercentenary Cup
The final race of the day was abandoned as the wind just stopped and the waters surface was as smooth as a pane of glass.
At the end of day one the points were as follows:
Thrumster Estate Cup, races 1 & 3
- Kindling 6 (51:39)
QuaterCentenary Cup races 2 & 4
- Kindling 6 (40:38)
- Aurora 5 (42:40)
- Restlesswave 4 (50:17)
- Barracuda 3 (54:20)
Sunday
Fifth race - 1st leg of MayDay Shield
Sunday began with a tantalising breath of wind which was a welcome improvement compared to Saturday. The fleet varied between mid & large sails. As we proceeded beyond the startline all boats unexpectedly pulled towards the long shore before redirecting again towards the short shore. The wind blows in strange ways when its light. At the burn they tacked towards the long side before entering the returning goal. Kindling did an end to end run not the quickest but it was just behind the leading Aurora. With spinnakers quickly fitted Kindling managed to release before Aurora. Both vessels then returned along the short shore with a few adjustments Kindling extended its lead. Skua and Restlesswave had a very good spinnaker run and managed to catch Aurora as it backfilled pirouetting a couple of times at the Coronation Pier.
Result: 1. Kindling, 2. Restlesswave, 3. Skua, 4. Aurora, 5. Bluehaze
Sixth race - 1st Leg of SMYA Northern Trophy
The wind disappointingly eased further, an attempt was made to begin this race but progress beyond the shed was impossible so we abandoned another race.
Seventh race - 2nd leg of MayDay Shield
With an extended break a slight breeze became noticeable. Aurora set the pace with the fleet bunched together as they approached the burn, BlueHaze and Skua requiring adjustment unavoidably hampered their progress. Kindling had a slack jib which flapped occasionally but it did sail from end to end. On the return with spinnakers fitted Aurora had a commanding lead which Restlesswave could not reduce. Kindling was reasonably quick and clawed back some time but landed in the Hole. BlueHaze and Skua both had good spinnaker runs to finish.
Result: 1. Aurora, 2. Restlesswave, 3. Kindling, 4. Bluehaze, 5. Skua
Eighth race - 2nd Leg of SMYA Northern Trophy
The final race of our Mayday event, from the off Aurora again set the pace all boats picked up towards the long side required slackening before entering the return goal. On the return both Aurora and Restlesswave were neck and neck as spinnakers were being fitted, Aurora managing to release first. Restlesswave just moments after release collided with BlueHaze fortunately both were quickly recovered to continue. Aurora and Restlesswave followed the short shore whilst Kindling was tight adjusted at the Chicken rock it progressed gaining on Restlesswave and pipped it across the finishline. Skua was unfortunate landing in the Hole with the mainsail unhooked it sailed to the opposing shore before continuing where BlueHaze passed to gain a position.
Result: 1. Aurora, 2. Kindling, 3. Restlesswave, 4. Bluehaze, 5. Skua

To summarise the weekends sailing, it was challenging, the light winds were very frustrating at times but all participants had fun none the less. The overall winner was Kindling which managed to sail in conditions that others could not.
First race, midsized sails fitted with spinnakers attached to their port sides. Barracuda sped off to a good start but as we all passed the shed boats began to pull towards the long shore Kindling slacker continued along the short shore extending a good lead. Aurora, Pioneer & Barracuda all on the long side struggling along the rocky shore line. On the return with spinnaker removed a slow moving Kindling managed to maintain the lead even though the others were gaining quickly Aurora in particular caught and pipped Pioneer across the finish line.
1. Kindling Kevin & Michael Paterson 31:14, 2. Aurora Archie & Fiona Miller 33:12, 3. Pioneer Peter & Rory Sinclair 34:30, 4. Barracuda Adam Robertson, Shirley & Cory Macleod 34:30.
Second race, Aurora was the pace setter with Kindling close behind, Pioneer and Barracuda both requiring a touch on the long side prior to eneering the returning goal. On the return leg Aurora was ahead of Kindling whilst Pioneer was sailing high and fast. Kindling had a long tack across the loch where it was slackened aiming for the finish line. Aurora and Pioneer together proceeded to the the shed before tacking resulting in a visit to the Hole. Although behind Kindling managed to close the gap as they were being recovered. Neck and neck Pioneer was slackened and sailed to the point giving the position to Aurora.
1. Kindling Kevin & Michael Paterson 29:20, 2. Aurora Archie & Fiona Miller 30:57, 3. Pioneer Peter & Rory Sinclair 34:30, 4. Barracuda Adam Robertson, Shirley & Cory Macleod 35:01.
First race, Kindling sailing high initially taking the lead but then a quickly moving Aurora passed as we all proceeded down the loch. At the halfway mark boats began to struggle with even lighter winds only managing to sail across the wind which meant the boats sailed from side to side making no progress towards the returning goal. That is all apart from Kindling which almost made it to the returning goal, about 100ft away the wind dropped to nothing, the water was so calm it was like a mirror not evan a ripple. The race was abandoned we ran out of time.
Second race, Kindling and Restlesswave were the only vessels to begin this race the others chose not to begin. Together they sailed in a light breeze which slowly dissipated as we progressed. Kindling managed to continue moving in the right direction and made it to the returning goal. A quick turnaround would make little difference today all sails were slackened for a slow return. Kindling the only vessel to complete the race distance. Restlesswave retired.

Five model yachts began the race but the light winds proved troublesome. Each vessel fitted their largest sails. Sailing began with the first tack towards the shore short. Kindling took the lead with Skua following. Aurora, Pioneer and Restlesswave had numerous failed attempts at progressing beyond the shed and so they were eventually removed.

A decent breeze was blowing today, all boats were fitted with mid sized sails apart from Kindling with its smallest. As we began Restlesswave and Pioneer sailing high but slow down the middle of the loch. The fleet seperated and each boat took its own path as they spread themselves across the loch. But surprisingly the gap between to boats was minimal as they converged at the returning goal. On the return with spinnakers fitted on the starboard side. Restlesswave was steadily maintaining its lead ahead of Aurora and Kindling who were jostling for second position. At the shed Pioneer was tightened to avoid the Point but overtightened both Skua and Bluehaze passed by.

From the off as before we were all sailing high towards the long side, Bluehaze overly tight changed tack. Aurora running slack was fast but required more tacks. Pioneer caught up with Restlesswave only to collide, both turned and landed on the long side just before the Chicken rock requiring multiple adjustments to negogiate their way around the rocky shore line. Kindling however had a long tack to the burn with a short tack near the returning goal prior to fitting its spinnaker on its starboard side. With a good steady run it continued to the Hole where it accidentally backfilled and began sailing towards the shed thankfully with a gust of wind it turned and continued to the finish. Pioneer and Bluehaze both had good runs to the finish but Restlesswave and Aurora struggled on the long side.

A good breeze was blowing from the sea today. Midsized sails were fitted to all vessels. Pioneer took an early lead with tight sails and their leeches flapping it was moving at pace. Restlesswave was also tight with Skua hot on their heels. They all headed towards the longside where they were slackened. Kindling sailing way too high and moving slowly grounded on the longside just prior to the Chicken rock. On the return spinnakers were fitted on the starboard side of each vessel. Pioneer leading but with a small spinnaker fitted the mainsail pushed the boat to long side. Restlesswave moving steadily along the short shore was gaining. Skua and Kindling were behind but sailing at pace. Pioneer eventually made it into the Hole where it lost a lot of time as both Kindling and Skua passed by, but Restlesswave was too fast and was first to cross the finish line.
1st Restlesswave Graham & Adam Robertson 27:30, 2nd Kindling Kevin & Katie Paterson 30:17, 3rd Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 31:05, 4th Pioneer Peter & Rory Sinclair 37:20
For the second race, Kindling reduced sail size to gain better control. From the startline it was too slack and required an early tack at the shed before continuing to the Chicken rock where it picked up some weed, which is unusual for this time of year. RestlessWave and Pioneer sailing head to head followed the short shore with a long tack before tacking for the last run to the returning goal. Their pace was impeded by weed located just outside the returning goal. On the return they remained neck and neck, however Pioneer sailing steadier with its larger spinnaker. They continued together all the way to the finish line. Kindling was gaining on the leaders with a fast spinnaker run but the distance was too great to overcome.
1st Restlesswave Graham & Adam Robertson 28:06, 2nd Pioneer Peter & Rory Sinclair 28:31, 3rd Kindling Kevin & Katie Paterson 31:50

A very blustery day with rough waters, the wave crests were almost twice the length of boats which meant they were in for a rough time. We set off tacking to and fro but progress was slow, the boats were healing over so much the sails were acting like sacks blowing the boats sideways rather moving forwards. Kindling slackened the sails to spill the wind and immediately began to sail better. First at the returning goal with spinnaker fitted on its starboard side it started well but the gusts of wind would heel it over driving it to the long side. As it neared the Hole with a spinnaker side swap it sailed to the shed for its final run to the finish line. The Pioneer reached the returning goal had a quick spinnaker run with a single touch it made great progress as it sailed down the centre of the loch reducing the gap.
1st Kindling Kevin, Katie & Alexa Paterson 40:23, 2nd Peter & Rorie Sinclair 45:01
During the interval its was decided not to conduct a second race in case of breakages.
A bright day with clear skies with light winds and snow on the ground. We began sailing with top suits and with a beam wind, Kindling adopted a flat spinnaker whereas Barracuda and Aurora chose not to. Sailing was slow as we progressed towards the Chicken rock for a tack. However Aurora struggled to make any headway much beyond the startline as it was undersailed. Barracuda dominated as Kindling struggled to keep pace. The closer we sailed to the returning goal the more the wind shifted to a southerly direction. On the return Barracuda fitted a balloon spinnaker on its portside as it made its way towards the finish following the short shore. Kindling with no spinnaker flicked the jib out to mimmick a spinnaker also sailed along the short side slowly gaining on the Barracuda. Approaching the shed the boats clashed as they danced around in the light winds, eventually coming ashore for separation. Upon release Kindling continued to pass the shed but unfortunately Barracuda backfilled and headed to the Hole. Beyond the shed Kindling also backfilled. Barracuda was recovered and regained the lead to complete the race. Kindling persevered and just managed to finish within the one hour deadline.
1st Barracuda Graham & Adam Robertson 49:02, 2nd Kindling Kevin Paterson & Sandy Bremner 59:05
The second race again was dominated by the Barracuda but this time Aurora with a larger set of sails fitted was chasing hard. At the retuning goal the three yachts were fairly close. On the return with spinnakers fitted on the portside Barracuda led followed the short side requiring only a couple of adjustments. Aurora with a large balloon spinnaker was on the far side moving at pace gaining on the leader. Kindling trailing decided to fit a larger spinnaker but it caused further stability issues and it continued with difficulty.

A breezy day greeted the Wick Model Yacht Club as we return for our new season. Its a welcome relief returning to the outdoors after all the Covid lockdowns. We began with a head wind tacking to and fro three times before reaching the returning goal for a quick spinnaker return.
From the whistle blow, Kindling took an early lead, BlueHaze and Skua together and Barracuda lagging as it was trimmed too high. But as the race progressed this slow pace and lack of tacks meant Barracuda was in the midst of the flotilla on the return leg. Kindling maintained its lead to the shed when misfortune struck, the mainsail flipped and rather than continue to the finishing line it headed across the loch. The time lost allowed the BlueHaze and Barracuda to close the gap. Skua at the rear was overpowered with its large spinnaker. A recovered Kindling was pipped across the finish line by the Barracuda.
Barracuda returned to sailing after a 28year sabbatical with a recent winter refit.
1st Barracuda Graham & Adam Robertson 32:10, 2nd Kindling Kevin & Lewis Paterson 32:39, 3rd Michael & Reuben Paterson 33:05, 4th Skua David Sutherland & Innes Scollay 36:33
For the second race a neatly trimmed Barracuda led with pace from the startline. Kindling and Skua following but not gaining. On the return with its spinnaker fitted to the port side Barracuda had a good run to the edge of the Hole. Kindling gaining ever so slightly had an adjustment on the long side to avoid the Hole, however with little effort Barracuda rounded the shoreline to continue in first position across the finishing line followed by Kindling. Skua was removed.
