SEASON 2007 - Reports
Last day of the season but this did not disappoint it was going to be a very competitive day. The wind was strong and increasing in strength as the day went on a small drizzle of rain appeared but this did not deter any of the sailors, small sails were essential.
No radio controlled racing took place as the prestigious 1903 cup was up for grabs, the radio sailors set down their controls to do things the old fashioned way and free sail. The poor weather seems to have prevented spectators this week but we were visited by some of the local wildlife consisting of couple of swans and a dozen black fluffy ducklings.
The first race of the day was for the Wm. Sinclair Cup. First place went to the Apollo sailed by D. McWilliam in a time of 26:36, Second, Girl Janis, B. Scollay and J. Tait in 27:08, Third, Thor, R.Webster in 30:25
The second race and last of the season was for the trophy that everyone desires the 1903 cup. First place went to the Apollo sailed by D. McWilliam in a time of 27:50, Second, Thor, R.Webster in 29:00, Third, Firewood, K.Paterson and A.Paterson in 40:00
The prize giving was held in the evening at the Smiddy Inn with the majority of the trophies going to the most consistent boat of the season the Apollo.
Sunday was blessed with light winds with everyone fitting their largest set of sails. Light winds are notorious for changing direction and that was exactly what happened over the days racing.
The first race of the day for the 3rd round of the Dunlin Cup saw the Thor in first place in a time of 43mins sailed by R Webster, 2nd Firewood 44mins 27sec, Orca 46mins 38sec and the Argo in 56mins.
The second race the 5th leg of the Cameo Shield saw only 2 finishers, first place went to Thor in 38mins 10sec and 2nd Orca in 45mins.
The wind changed direction part way through the race causing the other boats to retrace there steps and head back to the goal time was against them.
Only 2 radio controlled yachts competed in their 2 races. The first race for the 4th round of the George Groat Cup went to Tempest sailed by J Tait in a time of 42mins, 2nd Tsunami 49mins.
The 2nd race for the 13th round of the McAllan Shield went to Tsunami sailed by B Scollay in a time of 39mins 47sec, 2nd Tempest 43mins 30sec.
Sarclet played host to the annual InterCounty Challenge where contenders from the Wick Model Yacht Club and the Kirkwall Model Yacht Club contested for trophies. The two day event consisted of six races for five trophies.
Saturday began slightly overcast with a good breeze blowing, medium sized sails were used by all. As the day progressed the weather improved and the sun began to shine, by the time the 4th race of the day was held the heavens opened and everyone was drenched. A poor finish to the day but the trophies were evenly split one each. The Caithness Glass Bowl going to an Orkney boat the 'Hope' sailed by Arthur Deerness and Alan Walls with 11 points and The Quatercentenary Cup going to a Wick boat the 'Pioneer' sailed by Tony Wilson with 9 points.
Sunday was a scorcher of a day with light winds, everyone kitted their boats out with their largest set of sails to catch the slight breeze.
A welcome surprise to the event was David Sutherland with a boat designed and built in the 1960s, it had not been in the water for at least twenty years. This boat had shown everyone that there is still life in the old timers by winning the Mayday Shield with 10 points.
The Viking Cup which goes to the boat with the most points over the two days went to another Orkney boat the 'Sheerkhan' sailed by Lawrence Copland and Erik Bews with 25 points.
The Bill Drever Cup also went to the 'Sheerkhan' sailed by Lawrence Copland and Erik Bews with 25 points.
This year the Kirkwall Model Yacht Club came out on top showing the Wick Club how to sail. The Wick Model Yacht Club would like to thank the participants from Orkney for making the event competitive, sociable and enjoyable.
We would also like to thank the Dounreay Employee Charities Fund for sponsoring the event and we also wish to thanks the ladies who put so much effort into providing the sailors with sustenance. The baking was so good the racing almost never happened.

Saturday was a beautiful but odd day. The first race began without a hitch with a good healthy breeze. The first leg of the Cameo shield was fiercely contested, first and second place was separated by only 4seconds, first place went to Pioneer (T. Wilson) in a time of 30min 58sec, second place Firewood (K.Paterson) in 31min 02sec and third place Apollo (D. McWilliam & W. Thomson) in 34min 11sec.
The radio boats were competing for the first leg of the George Groat Cup with the win going to the newest boat in the club, Tsunami (B. Scollay) in a time of 29min 04sec and second place went to Tempest (J. Tait) in 31min 03sec.
The second race was the odd part of the day the boats set off at their respected intervals only to get as far as the shed whereupon the wind all but disappeared, boats were doing circles, they returned to the goal where they started even the radio boats were uncontrollable. The only boat oblivious to the lack of wind was the Aurora being beautifully balanced in the lighter winds carrying on regardless winning the first juniors race of the season the Donald Oag Memorial Cup, Aurora (A. Miller & Katie McKinnon) with second place going to Firewood (K. Paterson & Lewis Paterson).
The radio boats sailed for the 10th leg of the McAllan Shield with Tsunami (J. Tait) 28min 32sec in first place followed by Tempest (B. Scollay) 32min 55sec.
